Framing Your Visual: Safe Zones, Frame Margin and Aspect Ratios

Why content drifts off the edge when a track gets loud, what Frame margin and Logo safe zone actually reserve, and how to compose for 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1.

Here is a failure mode that is easy to miss and painful to discover after export: a scene that is beautifully composed at rest, and then the chorus hits and half of it slides off the top of the frame. You do not catch it in a still. You do not catch it while scrubbing the quiet intro. You catch it when someone watches the finished video.

The cause is structural rather than a matter of taste. Audio-reactive geometry is, almost by definition, a size multiplied by a loudness number — and a loudness number does not know where the edge of your frame is. This post covers the controls that put a boundary on that, and how to compose for each aspect ratio so the boundary rarely matters.

Frame margin: breathing room the audio cannot eat

Frame margin reserves a strip around the edge of the frame that audio-driven geometry is not allowed to grow into. It defaults to a small 3.5% — enough that shapes stop short of the pixel edge, because geometry that ends exactly on the boundary reads as cropped even when every pixel is technically in frame.

The limiting is soft rather than a hard cut-off, and that distinction matters more than it sounds. A hard clamp would flatten every peak above the limit to the same size, so the loudest passage of your track — the part you most want to land — would be the one place the visual stops responding. A soft limit leaves everything below the boundary exactly where it was and only compresses as it approaches, so louder always reads as bigger, forever.

Raise the margin when you are placing text or a logo over the scene and want a guaranteed clear border. Drop it toward 0 when you want an edge-to-edge, full-bleed look. It appears on the engines whose geometry is center-anchored and can grow outward — Bloom, Character Motion, Radial, Spectrum, Bars and Waveform.

Geometry scale is deliberately exempt

Frame margin governs what the AUDIO does, not what you ask for. Geometry scale still zooms the whole composition past the frame edge if you set it to — because sometimes bleeding off-screen is the design. The rule is that your choices override the boundary and the track's loudness does not.

Logo safe zone: the hole in the middle

The Radial engine's Logo safe zone does the opposite job: instead of reserving the outside, it reserves the center, so a ring of rays or bars automatically arranges itself around whatever you are putting in the middle. Inner radius and Outer radius then set where the reactive geometry starts and stops.

The practical workflow is to set the safe zone slightly larger than your logo actually needs. Rays grow on beats, and a zone sized to the logo exactly will have geometry brushing the artwork on every hit. Vertical anchor and where a spectrum sits

The Spectrum engine's Vertical anchor decides where its baseline sits: bottom (the default, matching Bars), center for symmetric and mirrored looks, or low for a baseline that floats slightly above the bottom edge. The choice is not just aesthetic — it determines how much headroom a full-scale peak has to grow into. A center-anchored spectrum has half the frame in each direction; a bottom-anchored one has the whole frame above it, which is why it is the default for anything with a loud master.

Composing for each aspect ratio

Aspect ratio is a composition decision made before you design, not an export toggle applied after. Each shape rewards a different arrangement:

  • 16:9 (YouTube, desktop) — width is cheap and height is scarce. Full-width engines shine here: Spectrum, Bars, Waveform. Radial and Bloom work too but leave large empty margins left and right, which is a feature if you are putting text there and a problem if you are not.
  • 9:16 (Shorts, Reels, TikTok, Canvas) — height is cheap and width is scarce. Center-anchored engines win: Radial, Bloom, Tunnel, Particles. A wide bar field in a vertical frame becomes a thin strip across the middle with dead space above and below.
  • 1:1 (feed posts, cover art) — the most forgiving shape, and the one where center-anchored geometry looks most intentional, since the frame's inscribed circle is the whole frame.

Leave room for the platform's own interface

Vertical platforms draw their own chrome over your video: captions, the username, a like-and-share column down the right side, and a progress bar at the bottom. That furniture routinely covers the bottom fifth and a strip down the right edge. Nothing you put there is reliably visible, so treat those regions as decoration rather than as places for a logo, a title or the moment you most want people to see.

The loud-section check

Before exporting, scrub to the loudest part of the track — the drop, the final chorus, whatever peaks hardest — and watch there rather than at the intro. That is the frame where content leaves frame if it is going to. Thirty seconds of checking beats re-rendering a full track.

Set it once, reuse it

Framing decisions are the most portable part of a setup. A margin, a safe zone and an anchor that work for your 9:16 output will keep working across every track you make in that shape, on any engine. Lock them in when you first build a vertical or square recipe and you stop rediscovering the same problem.
