Understanding Engine Variants

2 min readTemplates & Engines

Each visualizer engine has multiple modes (variants) that change the fundamental shape or behaviour of the animation — for example Spectrum has bars, mirror, radial, and line modes.

What is a Variant?

A variant (or mode) is a rendering branch within a single engine. All variants share the same audio pipeline, colour settings, and beat reactivity — they differ only in visual structure.

On a template detail page the variant selector appears as a row of cards or a dropdown at the top. Selecting a variant immediately updates the live preview.

Tips

  • Variants are also accessible inside the editor via the 'Mode' dropdown in the engine's settings panel — you can switch variants after opening the editor without returning to the template page.

Number of Variants per Engine

Most engines have 3–8 variants. The engine mode dropdown in the editor shows all available variants for the currently selected engine.
