Video Formats (MP4/WebM)

2 min readExport & Sharing

Novus can export your visualizer in two video formats: MP4 (H.264) and WebM (VP9). Understanding the difference helps you choose the right format for your publishing destination.

MP4 (H.264)

MP4 with H.264 encoding is the most universally compatible video format. It plays natively in every major browser, on iOS and Android without any plugins, and is accepted by every video platform including YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

MP4 files tend to be slightly larger than WebM at the same visual quality, but the universal compatibility makes it the safer default choice.

Tips

  • Use MP4 for any file you're uploading to a social platform or sharing with someone else.

WebM (VP9)

WebM with VP9 encoding produces smaller files than MP4 at equivalent visual quality. It is well-supported in modern desktop browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) but has limited support on iOS Safari and older Android devices.

WebM is ideal if you're embedding the visualizer directly on a website and know your audience is using a modern desktop browser.

Tips

  • Do not use WebM for uploads to YouTube — YouTube re-encodes all uploads to its own format anyway, so the format advantage is lost.

When to Use Each Format

Choose MP4 when: uploading to any social platform, sharing with collaborators, or using in video editing software like Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve.

Choose WebM when: embedding on a web page directly via an HTML <video> tag and targeting modern desktop browsers only.
